Freedom Worth Celebrating

Happy Fourth of July from our family to yours!

Today our little corner of Mississippi smells like charcoal and cut grass. Flags on porches, kids with sparklers, tables loaded down with more food than anybody needs. We love this day. We're grateful for the men and women who paid for the freedom we celebrate, and we don't take a bit of it for granted.

But while the burgers are on the grill, we'd gently point to an even deeper freedom.

"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." — Galatians 5:1

National freedom is precious, and history shows it can be fragile. The freedom Christ purchased is different. It can't be voted away, invaded, or repealed. No border contains it and no chain holds it. It was bought with a price far higher than any battlefield, and it's offered to absolutely anyone who will receive it.

That's the freedom that frees you from the weight of your past, the fear of your future, and the exhausting project of trying to be good enough. Finished work. Full pardon. Forever.

So tonight, when the fireworks light up over the pond, let them remind you of both — the country we're blessed to live in, and the Savior who set the captives free.

From all of us at Matthew 28:19: eat too much, hug your people, and celebrate free.
